The brief was for an ecological refurbishment and extension of a Grade II Listed 17th Century house and integrated ecological landscape design.

Building (project on hold):

  • Remove dilapidated 20th Century extensions
  • High standard of design and comfort
  • Super insulated throughout – reduction of heating by two-thirds
  • Purpose designed, high performance oak windows and doors – superior thermal performance, weathering and security
  • In-wall micro bore and underfloor heating
  • Renewable energy – solar panels, wood burning and energy management centre
  • German solid brick construction and earth plaster
  • Passive ventilation
  • Terraced grass roof garden
  • Underground brick vaulted cold store for fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Organic paints, stains and waxes throughout

Landscape (constructed):

  • Grey water filtration to feed Aquaculture pond
  • Rainwater collection, storage and filtration to supply building and overflow to Aquaculture pond and irrigation system
  • Black water (sewage) treatment reed bed system – bark pits, gravel bed and reed ponds leading to wildlife pond
  • Nutrient recycling system from Aquaculture pond, reed beds and wildlife pond to provide food for woodland gardens and walled vegetable garden
  • Wildlife habitat creation and wildlife ponds
  • Extensive tree and shrub planting including shelter belts and wildlife corridors
  • High food yielding forest and vegetable gardens
