The brief was for an ecological refurbishment and extension of a Grade II Listed 17th Century house and integrated ecological landscape design.
Building (project on hold):
- Remove dilapidated 20th Century extensions
- High standard of design and comfort
- Super insulated throughout – reduction of heating by two-thirds
- Purpose designed, high performance oak windows and doors – superior thermal performance, weathering and security
- In-wall micro bore and underfloor heating
- Renewable energy – solar panels, wood burning and energy management centre
- German solid brick construction and earth plaster
- Passive ventilation
- Terraced grass roof garden
- Underground brick vaulted cold store for fresh fruit and vegetables
- Organic paints, stains and waxes throughout
Landscape (constructed):
- Grey water filtration to feed Aquaculture pond
- Rainwater collection, storage and filtration to supply building and overflow to Aquaculture pond and irrigation system
- Black water (sewage) treatment reed bed system – bark pits, gravel bed and reed ponds leading to wildlife pond
- Nutrient recycling system from Aquaculture pond, reed beds and wildlife pond to provide food for woodland gardens and walled vegetable garden
- Wildlife habitat creation and wildlife ponds
- Extensive tree and shrub planting including shelter belts and wildlife corridors
- High food yielding forest and vegetable gardens
