Environmental assessment
Buildings are responsible for significant impacts on the environment.  They account for around half the UK's emissions of carbon dioxide, the main 'greenhouse' gas.

BREEAM is a tool that allows the owners, users and designers of buildings to review and improve environmental performance throughout the life of a building. It is a widely accepted and respected scheme that sets a benchmark for environmental performance and provides a wide range of benefits. It is independent and authoritative, being based on many years of construction and environmental research carried out at BRE together with the input and experience of the construction and property industries, Government and buildng regulators.

BREEAM guidance by experts
In an ideal world the approach to green design for new buildings starts before the site is chosen or the brief prepared.  In this way every aspect of the design can be included in the green design.  All too often many of the decisions and environmental impacts of a building are fixed before the assessor has the chance to be involved.

The Consortium believe that by using a BREEAM assessor to guide the design team through the design and management processes all the issues are addressed, thereby deriving maximum benefit from the building investment.
